Exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall since 5 July 2026 triggered severe flash floods, hill torrents and landslides across southeastern Bangladesh, affecting approximately 1. 28 million people in seven districts. The hardest-hit areas were Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari, where flooding and landslides damaged homes, schools, health facilities, roads, water systems and livelihoods. A Joint Needs Assessment conducted by the Needs Assessment Working Group (NAWG) found that around 436, 000 people are in need of humanitarian assistance, while more than 74, 500 shelters were damaged or destroyed and 59 deaths were reported. Approximately 33, 500 people were temporarily displaced, with many communities still facing challenges returning to normal conditions. Food insecurity, safe drinking water, sanitation, healthcare and shelter support emerged as the most urgent needs. The floods affected over 54, 000 hectares of cropland and disrupted livelihoods, while damage to more than 34, 000 water points and 35, 000 sanitation facilities increased public health risks. Women, children and vulnerable groups face heightened protection concerns, including family separation, school disruption, increased care burdens and limited access to essential services. Meanwhile, health facilities continue to face shortages of medicines and staff, raising concerns about disease outbreaks and reduced access to care. Humanitarian agencies and the Government of Bangladesh are providing emergency assistance, but significant needs remain. Priority interventions include food assistance, safe water, healthcare, shelter repair, livelihood recovery, protection services and support for affected women and children.
