After returning from Chocó Department to Cali on 4 September, AMDA decided to conclude the emergency phase of its relief activities in response to the mega quake that hit Colombia last month. Since the dispatch of its Japanese nurse to Colombia on 30 August, AMDA provided support in the disaster-affected areas in cooperation with AMDA Colombia and its local partner organization, Fundación Salamandra. While working mainly in Cali, the team also traveled to Chocó Department in the country’s western region for two days to conduct additional relief activities. As the epicenter was located there, Chocó Department had sustained devastating damage. On 3 September, after completing activities in Chocó Department, the joint relief team returned to Cali, where both AMDA Colombia and Salamandra were based. The following day, a meeting was held to share updates and exchange views on future support efforts. Considering that the situation began to stabilize, the team decided to end its activities including the aid work at Salamandra’s temporary clinic in Cali. Although emergency response activities have come to completion, AMDA will continue coordinating closely with both organizations for potential post-disaster reconstruction efforts.
