Country: Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) Source: United Nations Population Fund Please refer to the attached file. Venezuela is facing a major humanitarian emergency following two consecutive earthquakes of magnitudes 7. 2 and 7. 5 that struck the central-northern region of the country on 24 June, causing widespread destruction and more than 130 aftershocks. On Thursday, 25 June, preliminary reports indicated that there were more than 200 fatalities and close to 1, 500 injuries, with figures expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. The states most affected include the Capital District, La Guaira, Miranda, Carabobo, and Yaracuy. UNFPA is mobilizing to address the life-saving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and protection needs of women and girls affected by the earthquake. Essential maternal health services, emergency obstetric care, family planning, clinical management of rape, and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response must remain available from the earliest stages of the emergency. UNFPA is allocating US $500, 000 from its Emergency and Humanitarian Thematic Funds to support the immediate response following the level-2 emergency activation. Essential supplies and equipment are currently being shipped to affected areas to sustain life-saving SRH and GBV services. UNFPA is working with partners to secure additional resources to support rapid needs assessments and respond to the most pressing needs of women, girls, adolescents, and vulnerable populations affected by the earthquake.
