Pakistani security forces killed 29 militants in a major intelligence-based operation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar said on Sunday, adding that a senior Jamaat-ul-Ahrar commander was among those killed. According to Tarar, the operation was conducted on June 28 in Bajaur, where security forces killed the group’s top foreign commander, Khan Froosh alias Zabul, along with three of his associates. He said the slain militants belonged to Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which he described as an Indian proxy organisation involved in carrying out attacks in Pakistan. Tarar said Pakistani security forces also conducted operations across the border in Afghanistan’s Paktia, Paktika and Kunar provinces, where 25 more militants were killed. He added that a large cache of weapons and ammunition stored at militant hideouts was destroyed during the operations. The minister said the operations were being carried out under Operation Azm-e-Istehkam and would continue until terrorism was eliminated from the country. Referring to Saturday night’s attack on a Sindh Rangers camp in Karachi, Tarar said Jamaat-ul-Ahrar had claimed responsibility for the assault, in which three security personnel were martyred. He added that security forces killed three militants and arrested another in an injured condition.
