Understanding the Experiences of Persons with Disabilities in Disasters and Emergencies in Tonga

In support of the Government of Tonga’s focus on the needs and experiences of people with disabilities before, during, and after disasters, in September 2025 the Social Protection and Disabilities Division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) together with the World Food Programme (WFP) Pacific Multi-country Office conducted a research survey to gain insights into the real-life experiences of persons with disabilities in Tonga during disasters, hazards and emergencies, with a focus on how people with disabilities prepare for and respond to natural disasters, what impacts and burdens they face, how they access and benefit from social protection systems, and how they use cash and how it contributes to their coping strategies and recovery.
