While dryness persists in Somalia, Madagascar, southeastern Kazakhstan, Colombia, and Venezuela, flooding lingers in Eastern Africa, Hispaniola, Central Asia, and Northern South America. Africa Weather Hazards Flooding continues in parts of East Africa, while intensifying dryness has led to a severe drought in southern Madagascar. 1. Inundation continues in the Sudd wetlands of South Sudan. 2. Below-average rainfall since the start of the rainy season has caused abnormal dryness and drought across central and western parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Angola. This drought has caused crop damage, livestock deaths, and reduced water availability in the western and central provinces of Angola. 3. Continuous below-average rainfall since late December of last year has resulted in abnormal dryness across Madagascar, and severe drought in the country’s southern region. 4. Above-average rainfall in recent weeks has caused soil oversaturation, resulting in flooding and landslides in Congo, western DRC, northwestern/eastern Angola, parts of Zambia, southwestern Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, as well as central Mozambique, and southwestern South Africa. 5. Forecasted moderate to heavy, and above-average rainfall for next week is likely to cause flooding in central South Africa and Lesotho. 6. Over the past 30 days, rainfall deficits have caused abnormal dryness in the central parts of Somalia and eastern Ethiopia. 7. The forecast of much above-average temperatures could lead to abnormally hot conditions in southern Mauritania, CAR, western South Sudan, and western Madagascar over the next week.
