Countries: Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Zimbabwe Source: International Organization for Migration Please refer to the attached file. Between November 2025 and January 2026, a total of 44, 055 cross-border movements were recorded. From this population, a sample of 1, 887 migrants was interviewed across two key transit routes: Ressano Garcia, which monitors movements along the Mozambique-South Africa corridor, and Zobue, which tracks movements between Mozambique and Malawi. Of the interviewed migrants, 52 per cent were entries into Mozambique while 48 per cent were departures to neighbouring countries, mainly South Africa, Malawi and Zimbabwe, largely driven by short-term economic opportunities, including trade and temporary labour migration. Among the interviewed travellers, 38 per cent reported Malawi as their country of habitual residence, followed by 36 per cent from Mozambique, 13 per cent from Zimbabwe, and 9 per cent from South Africa, with the remainder originating from other countries in the region. This distribution reflects predominantly intra-regional mobility within Southern Africa. In terms of demographics, 60 per cent of the migrants were male, while 40 per cent were female. The majority of movements observed were facilitated by buses (50%), followed by those travelling on foot (21%) and by private cars (13%).
