869kg of explosives used in Kohat police lines attack: Report

More than 869 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the attack on the Old Police Lines in Kohat on September 18, according to a Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) report submitted to the Central Police Office. The report said an explosives-laden vehicle was used to target the police lines when Friday prayers were underway at a mosque in the densely populated Hangu Road area. Following the blast, armed militants entered the police lines and took positions inside the Special Branch block. Police, the Elite Force, Counter-Terrorism Department and security forces launched a joint operation, which continued for around 21 hours. Eight militants, including a suicide bomber, were killed, while the death toll among other victims rose to 25, according to Deputy Commissioner Kohat Mohammad Nawaz Wazir. The BDU report said the blast created a crater measuring 6. 6 feet by 11 feet, with a depth of 4. 6 feet, indicating the intensity of the explosion. Unexploded material was also recovered from inside the Special Branch building. Two improvised explosive devices were found on the ground floor, while four more IEDs were recovered from a suicide vest found on the first floor. Senior police officials said the police lines and its mosque were the apparent targets of the militant attack.
