KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has taken a major initiative to improve the city’s water supply by adding 10 MGD for Defence and Clifton areas. Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) and the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) signed an agreement for construction of a new pipeline from Damlottee, Gadap Town. The Mayor said under the project, the pipeline will transport an additional 10 million gallons of water daily (MGD) from Damlottee to Defence and Clifton, helping ease persistent water shortages in the two key residential and commercial areas. The construction work on the Damlottee pipeline will begin next week and the project will be completed within 12 months, at the estimated cost of Rs14 billion. The additional water supply as a significant step towards addressing Karachi’s chronic water shortage, he said. Mayor said the project was being undertaken through the joint efforts of the Sindh government and the KW&SC, adding that government support was helping strengthen and improve the city’s water-supply infrastructure. He thanked the Sindh government for its cooperation and support for the Damlottee project. Sustained investment in water infrastructure was essential to meet Karachi’s growing needs. The agreement-signing ceremony was attended by FWO Head Brigadier Adnan Akhtar Ali, Station Commander Brigadier Imran Asghar, DHA Administrator Brigadier Amir Nawaz Khan, Sindh Local Government Secretary Dr Wasim Shamshad and other senior officials. National Assembly member Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Pakistan Peoples Party leader Syed Najmi Alam, Mayor’s Spokesperson Karamullah Waqasi, KW&SC’s CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, Chief Operating Officer Engineer Asadullah Khan, Secretary Board Abdul Raqeeb and Damlottee Project Director Muhammad Zahiid besides senior officials of the KW&SC and other relevant institutions.
