Navy Day being observed today to pay tribute to heroes of 1965 War

Pakistan Navy Day is being observed today (Tuesday) to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifices of naval personnel who fought during the 1965 war and defended the country against a numerically bigger adversary. The day commemorates the Pakistan Navy’s daring Operation SOMNATH, also known as Operation Dwarka, carried out on the night of September 7-8, 1965. During the operation, seven major Pakistani warships sailed towards the heavily guarded Indian coastal station at Dwarka and targeted key shore installations, including a radar station and a radio beacon. The Pakistan Navy’s submarine Ghazi also played a significant role during the 1965 war, serving as a strategic deterrent and demonstrating the navy’s operational capabilities. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their felicitations to Pakistan Navy officers, sailors and civilians on the occasion, expressing confidence that the force would continue to uphold its traditions and perform its duties with courage, honour and distinction. In his message, President Zardari said Operation SOMNATH against the Indian naval coastal station at Dwarka remained a reminder of the Pakistan Navy’s “glorious past”. He said the operation demonstrated the bravery and determination of naval personnel and contributed to building a stronger maritime force grounded in confidence and a commitment to defending Pakistan’s maritime interests. Prime Minister Shehbaz said September 8 served as an “inspirational reminder” of the courage, valour and determination displayed by the Pakistan Navy during the 1965 war. He added that during Marka-e-Haq last year, the Pakistan Navy demonstrated the same spirit and operational preparedness, which deterred a numerically superior adversary from launching aggression at sea. The day is marked annually with ceremonies and tributes to commemorate the sacrifices of Pakistan Navy personnel and highlight the force’s role in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests.
