In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Colombia last month, AMDA continues its relief activities in the disaster-affected areas in cooperation with AMDA Colombia and Fundación Salamandra, its local counterpart. On 2 and 3 September, the joint relief team traveled to Istmina, Chocó Department, in the country’s western region, where the earthquake’s epicenter was located. The team visited a hospital and a church in the city of Istmina for a needs assessment. As the team donated medical supplies including IV infusion sets during the hospital visit, its director explained that the facility remained operational although the earthquake had caused damage, tearing away part of its roof. In Istmina where building damage assessments had already been completed by the authorities, structures that were deemed unsafe were marked with “NO HAB” signs, indicating that entry was prohibited. Despite such circumstances, displaced residents were forced to take shelter in buildings at risk of collapse. Chocó Department was already facing economic challenges before the earthquake. This has raised concerns that certain obstacles could persist as the region moves towards recovery. The joint team is expected to respond to the needs on the ground further.
