US orders non-emergency staff in Karachi, Lahore to leave Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The United States issued a new travel advisory on Wednesday, ordering its non-emergency personnel and their families to leave the US consulates in Lahore and Karachi due to escalating security concerns following the recent US-Israel attack on Iran. This decision, according to the US State Department, comes due to ongoing security concerns, although there has been no change to the operations of the US Embassy in Islamabad. The travel advisory highlights the continued threat of drone and missile attacks in the region, particularly following the escalation of tensions between the US and Iran on February 28.The advisory notes that these security risks have caused significant disruptions to commercial flights. Furthermore, it underscores the persistent threat of terrorism in Pakistan, with extremist groups continuing to launch attacks, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, major cities like Karachi and Islamabad have also witnessed such incidents in the past, with potential targets including transport hubs, hotels, markets, military installations, and other key buildings. The US State Department also warned that protests and demonstrations are illegal in Pakistan, and proximity to such gatherings could attract the attention of security forces.American citizens were urged to avoid posting content on social media that could be seen as critical of the government or military, as this could lead to arrest. The advisory further cautioned that during protests, internet and mobile phone services are often disrupted, and the security situation in Pakistan can change rapidly. While security measures in major cities are relatively better, the advisory noted that petty crimes such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and mobile phone theft are common. As a result, American officials in Pakistan face restrictions on their movement and are often required to travel with armed security and in armoured vehicles.Special permits are required for travel outside Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, and consular services in certain regions, particularly Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, are limited.Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are categorised as “Level 4” regions, deemed extremely dangerous, and American citizens are advised not to travel there. The advisory also highlighted the higher risks of terrorism and abduction in Balochistan, where militant activity is prevalent, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains a hotspot for extremist groups. Travel near the Line of Control (LoC) is discouraged due to the potential for armed clashes. American citizens travelling to Pakistan are urged to stay updated with local news, avoid crowds and protests, refrain from displaying valuable items, and make prior emergency plans.Additionally, they were encouraged to register with the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program (STEP) to ensure they can be contacted by embassy staff in case of an emergency.Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
