PM discusses situation with Oman ruler

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday initiated a high-stakes diplomatic push aimed at de-escalating the volatile situation in the Middle East, triggered by the recent US-Israeli military strikes on Iran.In a telephone conversation, PM Sharif engaged in talks with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman, seeking to steer the region back towards dialogue and stability. The Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement outlining the urgency of the discussions, which focused on the worsening tensions that have seen the delicate peace in the region unravel. The escalation follows a series of Israeli attacks on Iran, which have sparked widespread condemnation and a further deepening of hostilities in the area. “The evolving situation in the Middle East, which has been exacerbated by Israel’s attack on Iran, has placed the peace and security of the entire region in jeopardy,” Pm Sharif stated.“I spoke with my brother Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman to discuss these developments. We both recognise the pressing need for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.”Oman, long regarded as a neutral actor in regional affairs, has played a pivotal role in recent years in facilitating dialogue between the US and Iran, aiming to ease tensions between the two global powers.Prime Minister Sharif noted that the recent violence, which has already claimed lives and triggered a wave of diplomatic responses from around the world, has disrupted fragile peace-building efforts that had been in progress.Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
