Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar on Sunday said motorcycles, rickshaws and Qingqis registered after January 1, 2006, are eligible for registration under the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Special Fuel Relief Scheme. Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, he said the condition of ownership had also been removed for motorcycle, Qingqi and rickshaw users. The minister said more than 2. 2 million people had so far registered under the scheme, with 92% of them being motorcycle, Qingqi and rickshaw users. “SMS charges for registration has been waived, while the limit of five litres of petrol per token has also been removed, ” he said, adding that motorcycle, Qingqi and rickshaw users would receive four tokens per month, while vehicles up to 800cc would get a discount of Rs100 per litre on 10 litres of petrol every 10 days. Tarar said the facility was available at all petrol stations and regular instructions were being issued to fuel stations in this regard. The minister said more than 557, 000 registrations had been completed in a single day, while 1. 9 million tokens had so far been issued. He said tokens had been issued to 152, 000 vehicles up to 800cc, while more than 545, 000 tokens were issued during the previous day alone. Tarar said the prime minister was being kept informed about the scheme on a real-time basis and further improvements would be made in light of public feedback. He said the scheme had been introduced as a targeted subsidy for people most in need of relief. The minister said around 25 million motorcycles were registered in Pakistan and their users would benefit from the scheme. “Complaints regarding the fuel relief scheme are also being received and addressed, while an awareness campaign is underway to facilitate the public, ” he said. People were also being provided guidance on registration through tutorials, he added. Law-and-order situation Commenting on the law-and-order situation, Tarar said the Islamabad High Court had issued clear orders regarding road blockades and disruption of public movement. He said the administration would ensure that public movement was not disrupted in Islamabad. The government would not let the protestors reach the federal capital territory, he maintained. “It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that no violent group enters Islamabad, ” the minister said.
