Chief of JI’s Karachi chapter assails Sindh govt, mayor

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief, Monem Zafar Khan on Wednesday said that the citizens are suffering from the consequences of “incompetence and corruption” within the Sindh Solid Waste Management Authority and the Water Corporation, both of which have failed to fulfil their responsibilities. Monem expressed these views while addressing a meeting of nine town chairmen from his party, held at Idara Noor-e-Haq to review the overall situation in the city. During the meeting, the town chairmen highlighted critical civic issues in their respective areas, including heaps of garbage, sewerage problems, and a shortage of drinking water, particularly noting the hardships faced ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. They asserted that due to the poor performance of the two institutions, public problems are increasing rather than being resolved, with both bodies becoming a source of misery for the populace. The meeting strongly condemned the inefficiency and mismanagement of the two departments and demanded they should be placed under the authority of town administrations. The chairmen argued that such a move would allow civic issues to be addressed more effectively and provide tangible relief to citizens. Addressing the meeting, Monem further criticized the Sindh government and what he termed the “imposed mayor, ” accusing them of showing no interest in resolving public issues despite the city’s worsening situation. He stated that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party-led provincial government is unwilling to transfer powers and resources to the grassroots level. According to the JI leader, the provincial government has centralized the entire local government system under its control while continuing to dominate Karachi’s resources and institutions. He pointed out that more than half of the city still lacks access to clean drinking water, its infrastructure is in a state of collapse, roads are broken, garbage piles up in many areas, and sewage overflows. He noted that even during Eid-ul-Fitr, there was no visible improvement, and recent rains have further worsened the conditions, leaving Karachiites in severe mental and physical distress.
