KP govt launches financial assistance for PWDs

PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa formally launched financial assistance for deserving persons with disabilities (PWDs) under its Ehsas Umeed Programme. The programme was formally inaugurated by Advisor to the Chief Minister for Zakat, Ushr, Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Empowerment Malak Liaqat Ali Khan at a ceremony held at the Hayatabad Special Education Complex, Peshawar here on Friday. Under the programme, a target has been set to provide Rs. 5, 000 monthly financial assistance to 10, 000 deserving special persons. Ehsaas Umeed Cards will also be issued to beneficiaries for the transparent disbursement of financial assistance. Speaking on the occasion, Malak Liaqat said that the entire process of identification and financial assistance for deserving special persons has been made transparent, merit-based and linked with a modern digital system. He said that the Social Welfare Department obtained data of 52, 000 special persons through the e-Disability System, while poverty scores of deserving individuals were determined through an IT system based on comprehensive socio-economic indicators. He further said that the socioeconomic assessment of special persons across the province was completed through 4, 400 local Zakat Committees, while the information provided by applicants was verified by the respective District Zakat Committees. The Advisor said that the beneficiaries would also be provided training in modern digital skills, technical skills and other vocational skills, enabling them to utilize their abilities as a source of income, including while working from home. He said that, instead of limiting support for deserving individuals to the distribution of wheelchairs and sewing machines, the government would adopt a modern approach focused on skills development, employment and self-reliance.
