Situation Overview On the morning of 26 August 2026, a sudden and powerful flash flood swept through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems in central Nepal, affecting settlements across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts, including the Rasuwagadhi border crossing area. Officials suspect that the flooding may have been triggered by an upstream ice or rock avalanche, or by a glacial lake outburst, rather than by local rainfall. The exact cause remains under investigation. At least 165 people have been confirmed dead, while search and rescue operations remain ongoing. A further, 826 people have been reported missing, including 579 tourists. Communication and physical access remain severely constrained, with telephone towers and electricity infrastructure damaged and roads into Rasuwa cut off, delaying assessments and the delivery of humanitarian assistance. Significant damage to critical infrastructure has been reported, including approximately 40 km of road, as well as damage to schools, markets, health facilities, private houses, police posts, weather stations and the Timure customs office. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) estimates that approximately 10, 000 households require immediate relief. The full extent of humanitarian needs and damage remains unclear pending completion of inter-agency assessments.
