Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has been recognised by the Nobel Sustainability Trust (NST), an independent foundation established in Switzerland in 2007 by members of the Nobel family and chaired by Peter Nobel, for efforts in climate resilience, forest restoration, wildlife conservation, environmental protection, air quality improvement and digital smog management. The recognition also highlights Punjab’s use of modern technology, real-time monitoring, digital platforms and data-driven systems to address air pollution and strengthen forest and wildlife management. Under Maryam Nawaz’s leadership, Punjab has expanded its use of environmental data, digital monitoring and modern enforcement systems to improve air quality and respond to smog and pollution. The systems support monitoring air pollution, identifying major emission sources, assessing environmental risks and developing responses to deteriorating air quality. Punjab has also incorporated digital technology, data, remote monitoring, modern surveillance and technology-enabled management systems into forestry and wildlife initiatives aimed at strengthening forest protection and restoration, monitoring natural resources, conserving wildlife and biodiversity and combating illegal activities affecting forests and wildlife. NST brings together heads of state, government leaders, ministers, international organisations, scientists, business executives, philanthropists and innovators to advance sustainable development and address environmental challenges. In an official communication to the chief minister, NST Chairman Peter Nobel highlighted Punjab’s shift toward data-driven, technology-enabled governance as a benchmark for international environmental reform. As part of the recognition, Maryam Nawaz had been invited to attend and address the NST Award Gala and Summit 2026 in Hong Kong, which will bring together world leaders, representatives of the Nobel family, scientists, sustainability experts, policymakers, international organisations, business leaders, philanthropists and innovators. The gathering will provide a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences on climate action, environmental sustainability, technological innovation, conservation, biodiversity, air quality management and sustainable development. Maryam Nawaz’s participation would provide an opportunity to present Punjab’s experience in using technology and innovation to strengthen climate resilience, improve air quality, manage smog, restore forests, protect wildlife and modernise environmental governance.
