Afghanistan: In Badakhshan, UNAMA reaffirms support for women and sustainable livelihoods | United Nations Peace Operations

Country: Afghanistan Source: UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan BADAKHSHAN – During a visit to Badakhshan province, UNAMA Acting Head and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Georgette Gagnon engaged with local authorities, women entrepreneurs, community leaders, and stakeholders on issues affecting the lives of people in the province, particularly women and efforts to address the impact of narcotics. In Faizabad, she met women entrepreneurs and visited a UN-supported drug rehabilitation centre. In Khash district, she toured a women’s safe space and a women-led dairy processing enterprise that offers a viable alternative to poppy cultivation. Gagnon reaffirmed the UN’s support for communities across Afghanistan and emphasized the need for greater investment in alternative development opportunities and sustainable livelihoods.
