Dow student wins AKU award for portable dentistry study

KARACHI: Omer Abdullah of Dow Dental College, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), has won the Best Research Poster Presentation Award at Aga Khan University’s International Student Research Conference (ISRC) for research examining how portable dental units could help deliver essential oral healthcare in remote communities lacking adequate dental infrastructure. Abdullah, who also serves as co-convener of the dental team at Ebtekar Rah Roshan (ERR), secured the distinction after the research abstract was selected from more than 1, 600 research poster submissions considered for the conference. The research was conducted under the supervision of Principal Investigator Dr Zobiyah Charolia, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ebtekar Rah Roshan, while the field component and data collection were supported through ERR’s community outreach initiatives. At the centre of the award-winning study was a practical healthcare challenge with particular relevance for Pakistan: How can essential dental services be delivered to remote populations where conventional dental infrastructure is limited or entirely unavailable? To investigate that question, the research team used a lightweight portable dental unit during community outreach camps in vulnerable and underserved areas of coastal Sindh, specifically Keti Bander, Jati and Zero Point. A total of 166 patients were evaluated using the mobile setup. The results were striking: 81. 3% of the patients were successfully diagnosed and managed entirely on-site, while patients requiring more complex treatment were systematically identified and referred for advanced specialised care. The findings provide practical evidence supporting the feasibility of field-based dentistry and point towards the potential of portable dental setups as part of a scalable model for improving oral healthcare access in underserved parts of Pakistan. Selected from more than 1, 600 research submissions The scale of the competition adds considerable weight to Abdullah’s achievement. His research abstract was selected from more than 1, 600 research posters submitted for consideration at the conference, before ultimately securing the Best Research Poster Presentation Award at ISRC. The conference brings together student research spanning medical, dental and allied healthcare disciplines, creating a competitive platform for young researchers to present work with scientific, clinical and public-health relevance. Against that backdrop, the recognition of a project centred on rural dental access highlights not only the academic quality of the research but also its direct relevance to a persistent healthcare challenge. Rather than focusing solely on a laboratory-based question, Abdullah’s research examined whether an alternative model of dental care could work in communities where the conventional clinic itself may be difficult to reach. Research conducted under Dr Zobiyah Charolia The research was conducted under the supervision of Principal Investigator Dr Zobiyah Charolia, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ebtekar Rah Roshan. Her role as Principal Investigator provided the academic and research supervision for the project, while ERR’s community outreach activities enabled the study’s field component to be undertaken in underserved areas. This combination of structured research supervision and real-world community implementation gave the project a practical dimension that would have been difficult to reproduce in a conventional institutional setting alone. ERR is a registered NGO in Sindh whose work focuses on the digitalisation of healthcare, research and education. Its outreach initiatives provided the foundation for fieldwork and data collection, allowing the portable dental system to be evaluated among communities facing genuine geographic and infrastructural barriers to oral healthcare. Coastal Sindh became the real-world testing ground The project used ERR-organised outreach camps across Keti Bander, Jati and Zero Point, three underserved locations in coastal Sindh. These communities provided a particularly relevant environment in which to evaluate portable dentistry. People living in remote regions can face multiple barriers when attempting to obtain dental treatment, including substantial travel distances, transportation costs, limited availability of dentists and the absence of permanent dental clinics or specialised services. These barriers can mean relatively manageable oral health conditions are left untreated until pain, infection or more advanced disease forces patients to travel for care. The study therefore examined whether bringing essential dental services directly to such communities could provide a practical alternative for at least a proportion of their treatment needs. Instead of requiring every patient to travel to an urban dental facility for initial assessment, the portable model sought to determine what could safely and effectively be achieved at the point of outreach. 166 patients put portable dentistry to the test The most compelling element of the research came from its field data. A total of 166 patients were evaluated using the portable dental setup, providing the researchers with direct evidence of how the model performed outside a traditional clinic. According to the study information provided, 81. 3% of patients were successfully diagnosed and managed entirely on-site. That means more than four out of every five patients assessed through this particular outreach model could have their immediate dental needs addressed without requiring treatment at a conventional dental hospital or clinic. The remaining patients, whose conditions required more complex interventions, were structured and referred for advanced specialised care. This referral component is particularly important. Portable dentistry is not intended to replace tertiary or specialist dental services. Its potential lies in providing initial assessment, appropriate basic management and an organised referral pathway for cases requiring treatment beyond the scope of the mobile setup. In that sense, the model can function as an extension of the wider oral healthcare system rather than as an isolated substitute for permanent dental facilities. Portable dentistry and Pakistan’s rural oral healthcare gap Pakistan’s dental workforce and oral healthcare infrastructure are disproportionately concentrated in larger urban centres. For populations living in rural, coastal or geographically isolated areas, access to routine dental assessment and treatment can remain difficult. Building a fully equipped dental facility in every underserved settlement may not be immediately practical. Portable dental units therefore offer a different approach: move appropriate components of dental care towards the patient rather than requiring every patient to travel towards the infrastructure. Lightweight systems may potentially support dental screening, diagnosis, preventive interventions, selected treatments and structured referral during outreach programmes. They may also enable dental teams to identify disease earlier and determine which patients genuinely require referral to higher-level facilities. The research conducted in coastal Sindh offers a practical demonstration of how such an approach might function under real-world conditions. Student research addressing a real healthcare problem Abdullah’s recognition is also significant because the project demonstrates how student research can move beyond an academic exercise. The research investigated a problem affecting real patients in real communities and tested a potential solution under the conditions in which that solution would actually be expected to operate. From an AKU award to a larger healthcare question Winning the Best Research Poster Presentation Award represents an important academic achievement for Omer Abdullah, particularly given the more than 1, 600 research poster submissions considered for the conference. For Pakistan’s dental community, the underlying message may be even more important. Where permanent dental infrastructure cannot easily reach patients, portable dentistry may offer one practical way of bringing essential oral healthcare closer to them. With 166 patients evaluated, 81. 3% successfully diagnosed and managed on-site, fieldwork spanning three underserved coastal Sindh communities, and an award secured from among more than 1, 600 research submissions, the study provides a compelling case for further investigation into portable dentistry as a potential component of rural oral healthcare delivery in Pakistan.
