First English translation of Ibn Battuta’s epic travelogue goes on show in Riyadh

article author: Arab News Author: Fri, 2026-07-31 17: 05 RIYADH: The King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh has unveiled a rare 1829 copy of the first printed English translation of Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta’s travels. The 294-page work by British Orientalist Samuel Lee from an abridged manuscript at Cambridge University features extensive historical and geographical commentaries and references to classical Arabic texts. Dubbed the “Prince of Muslim Travelers, ” Ibn Battuta, was a 14th-century scholar, judge and explorer who is still widely considered as one of the most famous travelers in history.
