KARACHI: A team of students from Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC), Karachi, has secured second position in the Scientific Poster Competition at Dentalnnovate 3. 0, presenting an innovative research project that explored how Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are reshaping the future of dentistry. The award-winning team comprised Aisha Bano, a Final-Year BDS student, along with her teammates Mehak Rani and Sumet. Their scientific poster, titled “The Role of Augmented and Virtual Reality in Shaping the Future of Dentistry,” was recognized for highlighting the growing role of immersive digital technologies in dental education and clinical practice. According to FJDC, the original concept and research idea for the project was initiated by Aisha Bano, while the poster was developed collaboratively by the three students under the mentorship of Dr Zahra Masood, Demonstrator, Department of Orthodontics, Fatima Jinnah Dental College. Exploring the future of digital dentistry The poster focused on one of the fastest-growing areas of modern dental education—how Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) can bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world clinical practice. According to the project, immersive digital technologies have the potential to transform multiple aspects of dentistry by providing realistic, simulation-based learning experiences before students begin treating patients. The presentation demonstrated how AR and VR can support: Simulation-based clinical training Preclinical dental education Digital treatment planning Patient communication Clinical decision-making Development of practical skills in a safe learning environment The students highlighted that these technologies allow learners to repeatedly practice complex procedures in virtual settings, helping build confidence and improve clinical competency before entering real patient care. Better education, better patient outcomes The team’s research concluded that integrating AR and VR into undergraduate dental education could significantly enhance students’ learning experience while contributing to improved patient care. According to the presentation, immersive technologies encourage active learning, strengthen clinical confidence, improve knowledge retention and help prepare future dentists for increasingly technology-driven healthcare environments. As digital innovation continues to reshape dentistry worldwide, the students emphasized that AR and VR have the potential to become integral components of modern dental education and routine clinical practice. Recognition reflects commitment to innovation Securing second place at Dentalnnovate 3. 0 represents another significant academic achievement for Fatima Jinnah Dental College and highlights the increasing involvement of Pakistani dental students in research addressing emerging technologies in oral healthcare.
