LAHORE: Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab Umar Mela visited Tehsil Ferozwala and Muridke on Monday to review cracks in the protective bunds, affected villages, flooded areas and flood relief camps due to the recent monsoon rains and flood situation. During the visit, the DG PDMA was given a detailed briefing on the restoration of protective bunds, sealing of cracks, controlling water flow, dealing with urban flooding, drainage, desalination and other emergency measures. He directed the relevant institutions to further expedite the repair of bunds and drainage process so that normal life can be restored in the affected areas soon. The DG PDMA visited the affected villages and flooded areas and met the public and reviewed their problems. He also inspected the flood relief camps and took a detailed review of the facilities provided to the affected families. On this occasion, he directed that the supply of food, clean drinking water, medicines and other basic necessities should be ensured without any interruption. Director General Umar Mela reviewed the relief activities of the district administration, Rescue 1122, irrigation department and other related institutions and directed to make mutual communication more effective. He said the protection of life and property of the people is the top priority of the Punjab government, therefore, all the concerned institutions should remain on full alert and relief and rehabilitation activities should continue uninterrupted in the affected areas. The DG PDMA made it clear that no negligence or lapse in safety arrangements would be tolerated. He directed to warn the citizens in time through door-to-door awareness campaign in sensitive areas to ensure special arrangements for the safe evacuation of women, children, elderly and other vulnerable groups and to keep flood relief camps, rescue machinery, boats, staff and evacuation plans active at all times according to the needs of sensitive villages. He said that as per the instructions of the Chief Minister of Punjab, all the advance arrangements are complete and all the concerned institutions including the district administration are fully prepared to deal with any emergency effectively.
