Highlights Between January and May, over 420, 800 people were newly displaced due to conflict, with Jonglei State accounting for the majority. Recurrent displacement, insecurity and continued population movements are overwhelming already fragile services, widening gaps in health, education, WASH and protection, particularly in conflict-affected areas. Public health emergencies continue to strain South Sudan’s fragile health system. Cholera remains the primary concern, with more than 104, 648 suspected cases and 1, 678 deaths reported as of 31 May 2026. The Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) outbreak in neighbouring DRC and Uganda has heightened preparedness measures due to cross-border transmission risks. Concurrent measles outbreaks and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) in Upper Nile and Central Equatoria highlight persistent immunization and surveillance gaps. Rising access constraints further hinder assistance delivery. . The 2026 Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) appeal remains only 43 per cent funded, with critical shortfalls in WASH and education limiting life-saving response efforts amid escalating needs.
