Agriculture sector: PM welcomes fresh Chinese investment

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said Pakistan’s cooperation with Chinese companies in agriculture and food security would help modernise the country’s grain storage system, while stressing the need for technology transfer and training of local workers. He was speaking during a meeting with a delegation of China’s FAMSUN, led by its Chief Executive Officer Jack Chen, which met him to discuss plans to upgrade Pakistan’s grain storage facilities. The prime minister said Pakistan and China enjoyed a long-standing partnership and that increased business-to-business engagement would further strengthen bilateral ties. Sharif, however, emphasised that such projects should include workforce development and training programmes to build local expertise. During the meeting, Chen said his company was interested in assisting Pakistan through modern storage solutions, technology transfer and training initiatives aimed at improving food security. He recalled his meeting with the prime minister during Sharif’s recent visit to China, saying the interaction paved the way for discussions on practical projects in Pakistan. A briefing to the meeting said FAMSUN would establish a demonstration centre in Pakistan for developing green silos, while existing storage facilities would be upgraded into environmentally friendly silo systems. The company and the Green Pakistan Initiative have already signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in agriculture and food security, according to the briefing. The meeting was attended by Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries Haroon Akhtar and senior officials. FAMSUN is a Chinese company involved in agricultural technology, animal feed production and food processing solutions. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
