Nation has highest respect for its martyrs: governor

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi and Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, chairman of the Paigham-e-Pakistan Peace Committee, on Thursday urged JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to withdraw his recent remarks about Pakistan’s security forces. They emphasized that the sacrifices of the country’s martyrs and veterans must remain above political differences. Addressing a joint press conference here at the Governor’s House, Hashmi said every soldier, police officer and civilian who had laid down their life in defence of the country deserved the nation’s highest respect. “The death of a martyr is the life of the nation. We are proud of our martyrs and Ghazis, ” the governor said. He described Islam as a religion of peace, tolerance and coexistence. He praised the professionalism of Pakistan Armed Forces, saying they had defeated a much larger adversary. Criticizing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he accused him of undermining humanitarian values. On the same occasion, Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi said that the Paigham-e-Pakistan Peace Committee represented scholars and religious leaders from all schools of thought and would expand its network to divisional and district level to further promote national unity. He said Pakistan’s martyrs belonged to the entire nation and warned that no one would be allowed to disrespect those who sacrificed their lives for the nation and country. Ashrafi said more than 8, 000 religious scholars had laid down their lives for Pakistan and reaffirmed that the country’s Ulema stood shoulder to shoulder with the Armed Forces in defending the nation against terrorism and extremism. He stressed that Pakistan belonged equally to the followers of all sects and religions. Ashrafi also said that terrorism had no connection with Islam and urged all segments of society to work together for Pakistan’s peace, stability and national cohesion.
