World Microbiome Day is being observed globally on June 27 to raise awareness about the vital role that microbial communities play in human health, agriculture, and ecosystems, with dental experts drawing particular attention to the importance of maintaining a healthy oral microbiome. The microbiome refers to the trillions of microorganisms—including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes—that inhabit the human body and surrounding environments. Scientists increasingly recognize these microbial communities as essential partners in maintaining health and supporting numerous biological processes. Among the body’s microbial ecosystems, the oral microbiome has emerged as one of the most important determinants of both oral and general health. The mouth hosts hundreds of species of microorganisms that normally exist in a balanced state, helping protect teeth and gums while supporting overall wellbeing. However, disruptions to this delicate balance, known as dysbiosis, can contribute to several oral diseases and may also influence systemic health conditions. Marking World Microbiome Day, FDI World Dental Federation emphasized the significance of maintaining a healthy oral microbiome. “For World Microbiome Day, FDI reminds everyone about the importance of the oral microbiome, ” the federation said. FDI noted that preserving a naturally healthy balance of microorganisms in the mouth is essential for both oral and overall health. “Keeping a naturally healthy balance is important for our overall health. An unbalanced microbiome in your mouth can lead to oral thrush, tooth decay and gum disease, which can also have an impact on conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, ” the federation said. Growing evidence suggests that oral diseases and systemic conditions are closely interconnected. Researchers have increasingly linked poor oral health and chronic inflammation in the mouth with a range of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions. The oral microbiome has therefore become a major focus of contemporary dental research, with scientists investigating how microbial communities influence immunity, inflammation, disease susceptibility, and responses to treatment. Experts in preventive dentistry emphasize that maintaining a healthy oral microbiome does not require complex interventions. Rather, it depends largely on adopting healthy daily habits that promote microbial balance and reduce harmful bacterial growth. Providing practical guidance, FDI advised individuals to use antibiotics only when strictly necessary, avoid sugary drinks, and maintain good oral hygiene practices. “Help maintain a healthy oral microbiome by using antibiotics only when strictly necessary, avoiding sugary drinks, and practising good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day and cleaning between them with floss or interdental brushes, ” FDI said. Dental public health experts note that preventive oral care remains one of the most effective strategies for preserving microbial balance and reducing the burden of preventable oral diseases worldwide. As World Microbiome Day is observed around the globe, health professionals say growing understanding of microbial ecosystems is reshaping approaches to oral healthcare and reinforcing the message that maintaining a healthy mouth is an important component of overall health and wellbeing.
