ISLAMABAD: Khyber Medical University (KMU) has marked a significant milestone in its healthcare and academic journey with the inauguration of its first Executive Dental Clinic at the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS), Islamabad, strengthening access to oral healthcare services while creating new clinical learning opportunities for students. The clinic was formally inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq (SI) in the presence of faculty members, students, healthcare professionals, and distinguished guests. The launch represents an important step in KMU’s broader vision of integrating healthcare delivery, clinical education, and community service under one platform. The establishment of the dental clinic reflects the university’s commitment to addressing oral healthcare needs while simultaneously enhancing practical training opportunities for students pursuing careers in dentistry and allied health sciences. A milestone initiative for oral healthcare The initiative was led by Dr. Benish Aleem, who has been entrusted with the establishment and operationalization of dental clinics across KMU’s constituent institutes. The KMU-IHS Islamabad Dental Clinic is the first project successfully completed under this university-wide initiative. Dr. Benish Aleem, Dr. Mohammad Arsalan, and Dr. Afreenish Malik worked collectively to bring the project from concept to reality, laying the foundation for a facility that aims to benefit both students and the wider community. The clinic is expected to play a vital role in improving access to preventive and basic oral healthcare services while supporting the university’s academic mission. Free dental camp attracts hundreds To commemorate the inauguration, KMU-IHS Islamabad organized a Free Dental Check-up Camp and Dental Awareness Seminar in collaboration with Colgate. The event was coordinated and managed by Dr. Afreenish Malik, who oversaw the planning and execution of the inauguration ceremony, public awareness activities, and free dental screening initiative. The response from the community was overwhelming, with approximately 450 to 500 individuals benefiting from free dental consultations, oral examinations, oral health counseling, and preventive care guidance. The dental awareness seminar further highlighted the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene, early detection of dental diseases, and regular dental check-ups as key components of overall health and wellbeing. Strengthening community engagement The launch of the dental clinic aligns with KMU’s growing emphasis on community-focused healthcare initiatives. University officials noted that oral diseases remain among the most common health problems worldwide, yet access to affordable dental care continues to be a challenge for many communities. By opening its doors to the public, the KMU-IHS Dental Clinic aims to help bridge this gap through accessible and patient-centered services. The clinic is expected to serve as a valuable resource for residents seeking quality oral healthcare while promoting awareness about preventive dentistry and oral disease prevention. Advancing clinical education Beyond patient care, the newly established facility will serve as an important teaching and training center for students enrolled in Dental Technology and other allied health sciences programs. As a dedicated teaching facility, the clinic will provide students with opportunities to observe clinical procedures, develop practical competencies, and gain exposure to real-world healthcare environments under professional supervision. University officials believe that the availability of in-house clinical training facilities will significantly enhance educational outcomes by reducing reliance on external placements and creating a more integrated learning experience. The initiative also supports modern competency-based healthcare education by enabling students to strengthen their clinical skills while engaging directly with patients and healthcare teams. Leadership support and institutional commitment The successful inauguration and associated activities were facilitated through the leadership and support of Director KMU-IHS Islamabad, Dr. Shehnaz Dilawar, whose administrative guidance played a key role in ensuring the smooth execution of the event. During the ceremony, certificates of appreciation were presented to students, healthcare professionals, support staff, and other contributors who helped make the initiative a success. Dean Allied Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Haider Darain, along with faculty members, commended the establishment of the clinic and appreciated the efforts of the dental team in achieving this important institutional milestone. A step forward for healthcare and education The inauguration of the KMU-IHS Islamabad Dental Clinic represents more than the opening of a new healthcare facility. It reflects KMU’s continued investment in healthcare innovation, workforce development, experiential learning, and community engagement. By combining accessible oral healthcare services with high-quality clinical training, the university aims to create lasting benefits for patients, students, and the broader healthcare ecosystem. As demand for skilled oral healthcare professionals continues to grow, initiatives such as the KMU-IHS Dental Clinic demonstrate how academic institutions can play a meaningful role in improving healthcare delivery while preparing the next generation of healthcare providers.
