Country: South Africa Source: European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations From 5 to 7 May, heavy rain from a low‐pressure system triggered flooding across the Western and Eastern Cape, leading to evacuations, road closures and infrastructure damage. Media reports said one person died in Knysna (Western Cape province) after a tree fell on a vehicle, another was rescued in North End (Eastern Cape), and around 2 000 people were displaced and 450 were affected in the Garden Route district (Western Cape province). 25 emergency shelters were opened in flood‐hit parts of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape. In the Gamtoos Valley (Eastern Cape), the Kouga Dam rose to 113 % of capacity, prompting evacuations from Kingsway Village, Big Fish, Gamtoos Mouth Resort, Ferry Hotel and other low‐lying areas, with shelters established at Katrina Felix Hall in Thornhill and Loerie Community Hall. Moderate to heavy rain is forecast for southern South Africa over the next 24 hours, with drier conditions expected on 9 May.
