Mali: Public Health Situation Analysis (PHSA) (5 May 2026)

Country: Mali Sources: Health Cluster, World Health Organization Please refer to the attached file. Summary of crisis and key findings The security landscape was marked by attacks by armed groups on civilians, security forces, economic infrastructure, and key supply routes, triggering fuel shortages—particularly in Bamako—restricting access and expanding insecurity southward. As of early 2026, Mali continues to face a severe and protracted humanitarian crisis affecting 16 million people, with 5. 1 million in need of assistance. The security situation during the last quarter was marked by a renewed surge in hostilities, leading to internal displacement toward northern areas, particularly Timbuktu—where 2011 households have been displaced—and central regions such as Ségou and San. In addition, a coordinated attack targeting the main strategic military point occurred during the last week of April in Bamako, Kati, Gao, Sévaré and Mopti leading to military and civilian casualties. Civilian movement, already severely restricted by improvised explosive devices and illegal checkpoints along key road and river routes, has deteriorated further. In Léré, Kidal, Sikasso, koulikoro and Sévaré conditions have reached a critical point, as a siege imposed by non-state armed groups is now posing a serious threat to food security. These conditions also caused further displacement, with Mali hosting 415 000 internally displaced people. In Koro, Bandiagara region, 91 582 new Burkinabè refugees were recorded as of December 2025. As part of the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, the Health Cluster have identified over 1. 9 million people needing access to healthcare, with 1. 5 targeted and 607 000 prioritised. 8 If sufficient funding is not received, 1. 6 million people will fall into unprecedented health insecurity. The current funding cuts affecting the entire humanitarian sector, and the resulting reduction in assistance (also linked to the factors mentioned above), are having a direct impact on Mali at a time when needs are increasing in vulnerable areas.
