Description Heavy rainfall on 1 May 2026 triggered severe flooding and mudflows in Kulob City, resulting in fatalities, injuries, evacuations, and significant damage to homes and local infrastructure. Emergency response operations remain ongoing as authorities continue rescue, clean-up, and rapid damage assessments. An operational headquarters has been established at the disaster site to coordinate response efforts. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Chairman of Khatlon Region visited the affected area to assess the situation, oversee response operations, and coordinate further assistance measures 2. Human Impact · Fatalities: 3 people confirmed dead. · Two individuals died after being trapped beneath collapsed walls. · One individual died from electrocution. · Injured / Hospitalized: 5 people remain hospitalized. · Reported ages range from 14 to 42 years. · Evacuations: · 450 children and elderly people were safely evacuated to secure locations as a precautionary measure. 3. Infrastructure / Housing Damage Floodwaters entered approximately 850 residential houses across multiple neighborhoods in Kulob City, causing varying levels of damage to structures, household assets, and access routes. Affected villages: Khati Roh Qurbon Zardakov Nonboyi Poyon Sughdiyon Zarinkuh Abdurahmoni Jomi 20-solagii Istiqloliyat Sarosiyob Madinom Ibronov Panjosiyob Fayzobodi Bolo Initial reports indicate disruption to community services, local roads, and drainage systems in several areas 4. Response Actions: The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, through municipal, district, and national emergency authorities, has launched an immediate response operation. Current actions include: Search and rescue operations Evacuation of vulnerable groups Rapid needs and damage assessments Debris clearance and clean-up activities Medical treatment for injured persons Monitoring of weather conditions and water levels Coordination of emergency support measures Local emergency commissions are conducting field assessments to determine the scale of impact and identify urgent humanitarian needs/ 6. Risk Outlook Further rainfall may worsen conditions, increase landslide risks, and delay recovery efforts. Continued monitoring and preparedness are recommended. RCST Action: The Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan (RCST) is supporting response efforts through its local branch network and volunteers. RCST actions include: · Deployment of branch emergency response teams to affected communities · Mobilization of volunteers to support field operations · Provision of first aid to injured and affected persons · Delivery of psychological first aid to affected families · Support to evacuation of vulnerable people from high-risk areas · Support to rapid assessments and data collection Coordination with local authorities and the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CoES) Information sharing with humanitarian partners Further RCST assistance will be guided by detailed assessment findings and priority needs identified in affected communities. 8. Planned Next Steps · Await the results of the detailed damage and needs assessment conducted by the Government Damage Commission. · Provide support to evacuated and most vulnerable households. · Mobilize humanitarian assistance based on verified assessment findings. (under DREF if required) · Continue coordination between government authorities and humanitarian partners. · Maintain monitoring of evolving weather conditions and secondary risks.
