World: Advancing the Rights of Children in Migration: Priorities for the 2026 International Migration Forum

Highlights With an estimated 37-42 million children on the move globally, this publication underscores the urgent need to place children’s rights at the center of migration governance. Ahead of the 2026 International Migration Review Forum, UNICEF calls on States to accelerate implementation of the Global Compact for Migration by prioritizing these critical areas: Ending child immigration detention Ensuring child-sensitive return and reintegration processes Guaranteeing inclusive access to essential services Expanding regular pathways for children and youth and supporting family unity Strengthening learning-to-earning pathways Improving data systems on children in migration contexts Drawing on promising practices from countries including Thailand, Jordan, Mexico and Uganda, the report highlights practical, rights-based solutions that address children’s specific vulnerabilities while promoting their protection, development and inclusion. It makes the case for coordinated, child-centered policies to ensure that every child on the move can survive, thrive and reach their full potential – wherever they are.
