Renewable energy, water supply and urban infrastructure: Sindh govt approves uplift projects worth Rs22bn

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh on Monday approved a series of development projects worth more than Rs 22 billion, with a major focus on renewable energy, water supply, and urban infrastructure, officials said. The decisions were taken at the 47th meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP), chaired by Najam Shah in Karachi. Among the largest allocations were two solar energy initiatives aimed at supporting low-income households. The government approved an off-grid solar home systems project worth 8. 42 billion rupees and an on-grid solar scheme valued at 9. 13 billion rupees. An additional 1. 5 billion rupees was earmarked for the solarisation of government colleges across the province. In the education sector, the PDWP approved a 300 million rupees Youth Education, Employment and Empowerment Programme, along with over 304 million rupees for the reconstruction of a government boys high school in Malir, Karachi. Several water supply projects were also cleared, including schemes for Bhit Island in Mauripur Town and for areas between Haji Raza Goth and Scheme-33 in Karachi’s District East, reflecting efforts to address persistent water shortages in the city. Urban infrastructure development featured prominently, with nearly 916 million rupees approved for road improvements in Korangi district and 500 million rupees for the establishment of a civic centre in Memon Goth, Malir. The PDWP also approved the construction of a judges’ lodge in Larkana at a cost of 184 million rupees. In an additional agenda item, the government sanctioned 1 billion rupees for the replacement of pumping machinery and repairs of trunk mains in Karachi, aimed at improving the city’s water supply system. Officials said the approved schemes highlight the provincial government’s emphasis on expanding energy access, upgrading infrastructure, and improving public service delivery across Sindh.
