UNHCR Iran: Protection Concerns Among Afghan Refugees – Helpline & Field Insights in March 2026

SITUATION OVERVIEW Following the escalation of hostilities in Iran on 28 February 2026, demand for helpline services increased. This trend suggests a link between the deteriorating security environment and the volume of protection-related inquiries. Reported concerns point to heightened anxieties and evolving risks among Afghan refugees. In response, UNHCR expanded its helpline capacity and continues to receive refugees in person at its offices. Coordination with UN agencies and humanitarian partners has also been strengthened to support referrals and facilitate access to services. These efforts are taking place in the context of the Inter-Agency Flash Refugee Response Plan launched in late-March, which seeks $80 million to scale up the response and deliver life-saving assistance to 2. 8 million people from March to May 2026. UNHCR’s requirements in the plan stand at $36. 23 million.
