Philippines Country Profile (March 2026)

The Philippines is among the world’s most disaster-prone countries, with about 74 per cent of the population exposed to natural hazards. Each year, around 20 tropical cyclones enter its area of responsibility, with 8 to 9 making landfall triggering floods and landslides. About 60 per cent of the country is mountainous and landslide-prone. Located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire, ” the country also faces frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Since 1990, over 560 disasters have claimed approximately 70, 000 lives. Socioeconomic vulnerabilities including poverty, informal settlements, and high-density urban zones compound the impacts of these recurrent hazards. Priority risks include tropical cyclones, hydro-meteorological flooding, landslides, volcanic eruptions and seismic events
