Country: Mozambique Source: European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Since the beginning of the month, heavy rainfall affected Mozambique where new floodings were severely worsened by rising water levels in Limpopo, Save, Zambeze, Lincungo and Revúbuè river basins in South Africa and Zimbabwe. The most affected provinces are Gaza, with areas already heavily affected by flooding in January 2026, together with Inhambane, Sofala, Zambezia, Niassa and Tete provinces. According to the National Disaster Risk Management Institute (INGD), from 1 to 21 March 2026, 137 983 individuals have been affected, and 37 deaths have been reported. 37 temporary accommodation centres are active, hosting 16 417 people. Severe damage on infrastructure has been reported, leaving flood-affected areas where humanitarian partners are responding inaccessible by road. Concerns are also linked to possible spread of cholera in flood-affected areas (7 814 cases and 83 deaths since September 2025). Resources are overstretched while EU partners are already responding, primarily in Gaza previously affected areas, while other underserved areas need immediate support.
