Country: Tonga Source: European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations On 24 March 2026, a strong offshore earthquake (magnitude 7. 6 reported by international agencies; 7. 2 by Tonga Geological Services) struck west of Vava’u at a depth of over 200 km, limiting surface impact. The quake was felt nationwide, strongest in Vava’u (MMI 6), but no casualties or major damage have been reported. About 20, 000 people were exposed; GDACS classified the impact as low. Precautionary coastal advisories were issued, with no tsunami threat confirmed. The situation remains stable, with no request for international assistance; impact verification in outer islands continues.
