Punjab Food Authority imposes Rs13.1m fine, seals 10 units

LAHORE: Enforcement teams of the Punjab Food Authority carried out a large-scale crackdown on sweets and bakery and inspected 818 sweets and bakery units and 1, 478 sweets shops during last five days, resulting in the sealing of 10 units and imposition of fines worth Rs13. 134 million on 653 food points. Food safety teams discarded 830kg of substandard sweets and cakes, 436 broken eggs, 120 litres of oil, 531kg of expired items, 466 litres of juices and cold drinks, along with 80kg of other food items. Additionally, 1, 579 units and shops were issued improvement notices for violations. READ ALSO: PFA lodges 2 FIRs, seals 3 renowned food points DG PFA Muhammad Asim Javaid said that broken and substandard eggs were recovered from bakery units and discarded, which were intended to be used in the preparation of cakes and other bakery items. He said that poor hygiene conditions were observed, including storage of food items in foul-smelling, fungus-affected freezers and presence of contaminated water on broken floors.
