Ukraine: Train Journeys Must Never End in Death and Devastation [EN/RU/UK]

Please refer to the attached files. HUMANITARIAN COORDINATOR FOR UKRAINE, MATTHIAS SCHMALE, CONDEMNS RUSSIAN ATTACK ON DNIPRO, WHERE OVER A DOZEN CIVILIANS WERE KILLED A few hours ago, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched an attack on the city of Dnipro. At least 13 civilians were killed and 10 injured at the city’s main railway station. Civilians preparing for a trip, welcoming or bidding farewell to loved ones faced death and devastation. Displaced people and humanitarian workers at a transit centre at the train station were in shock following the nearby explosions. On behalf of the UN, I express condolences to the families of those killed and wish all those injured and traumatised a speedy recovery. In Ukraine, train travel is a key means of transportation. Since the start of the year, travellers and railway workers have faced increased risks on every journey due to Russian military strikes and air alerts impacting the safety and reliability of trains. Recent months have been marked by repeated attacks across the country on civilian infrastructure critical to people’s daily lives, including bridges, hospitals, schools, shopping centres and railway stations. The images from Dnipro cannot become another story that fades from attention. Behind every casualty is a person, a family and a future changed forever. It cannot be repeated often enough that civilians and civilian infrastructure are protected under international humanitarian law.
