Panama: Earthquake in Azuero & Veraguas – Situation Report No. 05 (as of 16 October 2026, 12:30)

Please refer to the attached file. KEY POINTS Following the magnitude 7. 5 earthquake on 9 October, the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) reports 13, 623 people affected, from 4, 045 families. As of 16 October, it had assessed 5, 807 homes, where 20, 581 people live. Some 3, 696 people remain in 46 shelters, mostly in Mariato (Veraguas), and many other families are staying with relatives or sleeping outdoors. The Government has assisted 15, 139 people from 4, 485 families. Crews have started building the first homes in Las Tablas, Soná and Penonomé, and the Government will rebuild Tonosí Hospital and five health centres. Classes remain suspended at public schools while the Ministry of Education (MEDUCA) inspects the 619 affected schools. Of these, 35 collapsed, affecting 3, 031 students. The bridge over the Oria River has reopened, but rain and landslides still limit access to some communities, and the sites housing displaced families still have gaps in water, sanitation and protection. UN agencies and their partners have mobilized shelter items, mobile storage units and assistance with health, water and protection, among other areas, to back the Government-led response.
