UNICEF Panama Situation Report No. 3 (Earthquake), 12 -13 October 2026

Please refer to the attached file. Highlights According to the Ministry of Education (MEDUCA), 619 schools are affected, including 35 with severe damage. The government continues to assess the state of schools in the affected areas to determine conditions for safe reopening. UNICEF has offered its support to the Ministry of Education and coordinates with MEDUCA’s Regional Directorates to support the response and implementation of emergency learning spaces. According to assessments conducted on October 12 and 13, persistent gaps in water, sanitation, and hygiene were identified, particularly in affected rural and coastal communities. Community water systems are in need of rehabilitation and operational strengthening to ensure continued access to safe water. UNICEF contributes to the government-led response, in coordination with UN agencies, funds and programmes, deploying efforts with donors and implementing partners to reach the most affected communities with psychosocial support, water, sanitation, health and learning spaces in the context of the emergency. UNICEF requires $2. 57 million to meet the humanitarian needs of children affected by the earthquake. Funding gaps can limit critical and necessary interventions to save lives.
