KARACHI: Sindh is strengthening environmental regulation, pollution monitoring and climate-related initiatives as part of efforts to protect public health and promote sustainable development. In his message on the World Environmental Health Day, Sindh Environment Secretary Faisal Ahmed Uqaili emphasized that environmental health is directly linked to public health. Clean air, safe water, improved sanitation and measures to reduce pollution were vital for healthy society, he said, adding that Sindh government was integrating environmental protection with public health policies. The Environment Department was focusing on policymaking, monitoring, scientific research and coordination with relevant institutions to address pollution and climate change. The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) was enforcing environmental laws, monitoring industrial activities and taking measures to control pollution and improve environmental standards across the province. The department had also expanded cooperation with international organisations to improve environmental compliance in the industrial sector, control pollution and bring small and medium-sized industries within the environmental regulatory framework, he said. Uqaili said greater emphasis was being placed on scientific research and reliable data to better understand and address environmental health risks. The department was working with Aga Khan University on research and cooperation covering air pollution, heat stress, floods, environmental and climate health, and other health impacts associated with climate-related hazards. SEPA’s air-quality monitoring and regulatory systems were also being modernised and automated to improve environmental surveillance and strengthen the government’s response to pollution. Carbon financing and carbon markets had become an emerging area of Sindh’s environmental policy, with 13 projects currently being developed to generate carbon credits. The government was working with industry, investors and other stakeholders to expand carbon-market opportunities and attract investment in environmental projects, he said.
