Agri experts urge federal govt to allow export of 1m tons of sugar

ISLAMABAD: Agricultural experts strongly proposed the federal government to allow export of one million tons of sugar to save farmers and sugar industry and growers as well as millers from any crisis like situation in Pakistan. This has been stated by the agricultural experts at a seminar held at the National Press Club here on Saturday. Among others, Khan Faraz, an agricultural expert said that referred to the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) reports which hinted at delaying the upcoming sugarcane crushing season due to a massive surplus sugar in the country demanding immediate permission to export one million tons to avert a crisis. Furthermore, the sugar millers wanted to first sell the excess sugar of last season and then start cane crushing from 2026-27 crop, otherwise they said, they will not be able to make timely payment to farmers. This will also lead to financial losses. According to the President of PSMA, the country is sitting on a surplus stock of 1. 52 million tons. Also, the sugarcane crop has been excellent this year. Khan added that the industry has requested the Federal Government to allow export of one million tons of sugar to save farmers and sugar industry from ruin. This will not only protect growers and millers, but also help gain valuable foreign exchange for the country. This will also enable the sugar millers to clear outstanding dues of farmers and at the same time will ensure commencement of crushing season (2026-27) on time, Khan Faraz added.
