JMDC CON 26 takes periodontology beyond scaling to surgical skills

KARACHI: Periodontology at JMDC CON 26 moved beyond routine scaling as participants explored the diagnosis and management of gingival recession before putting surgical concepts into practice through a hands-on soft-tissue grafting exercise. The Department of Periodontology at Jinnah Medical & Dental College (JMDC) organised the workshop “Periodontology is Beyond Scaling, ” led by Head of Department Dr. Ujala Faisal and Dr. Fahad Aslam. From gingival recession diagnosis to treatment planning The workshop featured Dr. Tahira Hyder of Fatima Jinnah Dental College as the guest speaker. She delivered a detailed presentation on gingival recession, focusing participants’ attention on clinical considerations involved in its diagnosis, treatment planning and soft-tissue management. The session provided an opportunity for participants to explore periodontal treatment beyond conventional non-surgical procedures and understand the considerations involved in managing soft-tissue deficiencies. Participants put periodontal surgery into practice The theoretical session was followed by an intensive hands-on goat head exercise, giving participants an opportunity to translate periodontal surgical concepts into practical experience. During the exercise, participants performed soft-tissue grafting procedures in an interactive learning environment, allowing them to practise surgical techniques associated with periodontal soft-tissue management. The combination of expert instruction and practical training made the workshop particularly focused on clinical skill development, connecting the discussion of gingival recession with the technical aspects of soft-tissue grafting. JMDC CON 26 highlights practical periodontal learning By combining a specialist presentation with hands-on surgical practice, the session highlighted the importance of integrating periodontology knowledge with practical procedural skills in dental education. For participants, the workshop offered exposure to the clinical decision-making and surgical techniques involved in periodontal soft-tissue management, extending the learning experience beyond the traditional perception of periodontology as primarily focused on scaling. The workshop formed part of JMDC CON 26, with the Department of Periodontology using the session to provide participants with both conceptual understanding and practical exposure to periodontal surgical procedures.
