NA panel directs PFF to align constitution, rules with FIFA requirements

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary panel on Tuesday directed the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) to align its constitution and rules with FIFA requirements following concerns over football governance. The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination, chaired by Mahreen Razzaq Bhutto, reviewed the PFF’s efforts to revive the sport after years of inactivity and institutional uncertainty. Briefing the committee, PFF President Mohsin Gilani highlighted the federation’s recent achievements, performance and future plans. He said the national football team had won a trophy at an international event for the first time, describing the achievement as a sign of progress after a difficult period. Committee members, however, said the achievement did not reflect the overall state of football in the country and stressed that sustained efforts were needed to reverse its decline. The committee was informed that the PFF had remained inactive for a considerable period before its new leadership, including the president, was elected about a year ago in accordance with FIFA directions. The committee was told that some PFF rules and constitutional provisions remained inconsistent with FIFA regulations, with the federation saying it was addressing the discrepancies. The committee recommended that the PFF align its constitution and rules with FIFA requirements for better governance and development of football. Gilani said rehabilitation of football infrastructure was a priority and that talented players were being identified through a nationwide talent-hunt programme. Members stressed that investment in grounds, academies and basic infrastructure was vital, but said the PFF must also step up efforts to revive football. Separately, the committee recommended a sports complex on WAPDA land in Haripur, but WAPDA raised flood concerns.
