A new spell of monsoon rains is expected to begin in different parts of Pakistan from today (Sunday), with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in Sindh, Punjab and other areas and directing relevant authorities to remain on alert. According to the PMD, a low-pressure system is expected to move northwestwards, bringing rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds to several parts of Sindh from today until September 15. Rain is expected in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal and Tando Muhammad Khan, while Sanghar, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad and Jamshoro are also likely to receive rain from September 14 to 15. Karachi is expected to receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms from September 14 to 16. While the showers are likely to bring relief from the heat, some areas of the city could face difficulties because of the rain. In Punjab, the ninth and final spell of the monsoon season is also forecast to begin today. The PMD said most districts of the province, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum and Attock, are likely to receive rain from September 12 to 17. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad face a risk of urban and flash flooding due to the expected rainfall. Relevant departments have been directed to remain alert and prepare for any potential emergency. The PMD has also warned of possible landslides in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas during periods of rainfall. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution during the rains and ensure necessary arrangements are in place to deal with possible urban and flash flooding, strong winds and other weather-related hazards.
