‘Experts examine state of provincial governance, democratic discourse’

LAHORE: Legal and political experts came together on Wednesday to examine the state of provincial governance and democratic discourse in Pakistan, as Fikr-o-Amal, in collaboration with Naya, hosted a panel discussion at the South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) auditorium. The event drew an audience including civic activists, legal experts, students, and journalists, who gathered to hear Barrister Ali Zafar and political analyst Amar Rashid discuss the challenges facing provincial institutions. The session was moderated by Huma Ejaz Zaman. Both speakers addressed the critical role of strong provincial institutions, legislative efficiency, and the need for structured democratic discourse in Pakistan’s current political landscape. Barrister Ali Zafar focused on the constitutional dimensions of provincial autonomy, arguing that effective governance depends on empowering local leadership and reinforcing legislative frameworks. Amar Rashid, meanwhile, examined the societal and political mechanics of public debate, calling for more inclusive political engagement and policy-driven governance. The panel discussion was followed by an interactive Q&A session, during which audience members raised questions on provincial administration, decentralization, and public policy formulation. Organizers Fikr-o-Amal and Naya said they remain committed to hosting further public forums aimed at bridging the gap between policy discussions and public engagement.
