Nepra adjusts quarterly tariff: Consumers to pay additional Rs12.67bn

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has notified a positive quarterly tariff adjustment of Re0. 5194 per unit for the second quarter of calendar year 2026, which will increase electricity bills of consumers by about Rs12. 669 billion. According to an SRO issued by Nepra on Monday, the regulator, in pursuance of Proviso (ii) to Sub-Section 7 of Section 31 of the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act, 1997, has notified its decision on requests filed by the power Distribution Companies (Discos) for periodic tariff adjustment for the second quarter of CY2026. The decision had already been intimated to the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) on September 4, 2026. READ MORE: Positive FCA allowed: Nepra increases tariff by Rs2. 0581/unit Nepra approved an overall positive adjustment of Rs12. 669 billion on account of variation in capacity charges, variable operation and maintenance (O&M) costs, Use of System Charges (UoSC), Market Operator Fee, Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) impact on transmission and distribution losses, recovery of Power Purchase Price (PPP) on incremental units, and reversal of Captive Power Plants (CPPs)/Small Power Producers (SPPs) costs for Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO). The adjustment will be recovered from consumers over a period of three months — September, October and November 2026 — at a uniform rate of Re0. 5194 per kWh. The adjustment will be applicable to all consumer categories, except lifeline consumers, units billed under the incremental consumption package and prepaid consumers. Nepra has also extended the quarterly adjustment to consumers of K-Electric (KE) in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Nepra Act, National Electricity Policy and policy guidelines issued by the federal government. Accordingly, KE consumers will also be charged the Re0. 5194 per unit positive quarterly adjustment during September, October and November 2026. Lifeline consumers, units billed under the incremental consumption package and prepaid consumers will remain exempt. Nepra further directed that if bills for the applicable period have already been issued before notification of the decision, the adjustment may be recovered in the subsequent month. The regulator also directed the concerned entities, including Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee Limited (CPPA-G), WDISCOs and K-Electric, to ensure strict compliance with orders of the courts while implementing the decision.
